By supplying flavorful, lean meat that is free of synthetic hormones and maintenance antibiotics, Kaehler's Mill Farm meets the demands of many urban consumers. Kaehler's Mill Farm protects the environment by employing management intensive grazing practices that naturally manage animal wastes and avoid the need for animal confinement in feedlots or barns. These same grazing techniques provide cattle and sheep at Kaehler's Mill Farm with healthy diets of forage at production costs and labor inputs lower than those of confinement operations. Galloway cattle are a grazier's dream. They have all the characteristics of the other British breeds, plus more. The USDA Meat Animal Research Center at Clay Center, Nebraska, ranked the flavor, tenderness and juiciness of Galloway meat above Hereford x Angus. Galloways calve easily, generally dropping calves in the range of 70 to 80 pounds. Mature weights are comparable to other British breeds, in the 1,000 to 1,200 pound range for cows and 1,800 to 2,200 for bulls. The double hair coat is unique to production-size cattle, and means that they winter easily in the open in the coldest farming and ranching areas of the United States and Canada. Yet, Galloways require less feed than other production-size cattle during winter because of their double coat.
